KFEET at 15:

What we love about KFEET!

This is our anniversary week! On Thursday, 16th October, KFEET turns 15.

We’re so excited about this milestone and will soon share how we’ll be celebrating. But today, we thought it would be a great time to hear from the team – What makes KFEET special to each of us, and why we love working here.

Julie Kimutai – Manager and Educator, KFEET

As a teacher and administrator by profession, I spent almost 20 years teaching in different schools. Teaching has always been my passion. It’s what I truly love to do. But I’ve also always been deeply passionate about the environment and conservation.

When the opportunity to join KFEET came along, it brought together these two great loves. I am still very much a teacher, working with thousands of children every year, helping them learn about nature, ecosystems, biodiversity, conservation and the environment. But what makes working at KFEET truly special is that here, I’m not just teaching theoretically about conservation, I get to do it practically.

Every day, I get to interact with nature. I love KFEET because it gives me the unique opportunity to use my teaching skills and experience to inspire young minds in our great outdoor classroom – the forest itself.

Lucy Njoka – Education Coordinator , KFEET

As a graduate in Environmental Science, being part of KFEET has been a truly eye-opening experience. It’s amazing to see how the knowledge we gain in the classroom can be brought to life through practical, meaningful work. From water conservation and forest protection to biodiversity and waste management, it’s a real joy to pass on these important lessons to young, curious minds.

Each day at KFEET feels special. Leaving the busy city behind, we step into a calm and beautiful natural space—welcomed by chirping birds, rustling leaves, swaying trees, and playful monkeys. Sometimes, even the majestic  Grey Crowned Cranes stroll across our ground.

One of the most fulfilling parts of my day is welcoming the many students who visit us, eager to learn and connect with nature.

Getrude Rop – Administrative Assistant, KFEET

Working at KFEET as an Administrative Assistant has been an enriching experience that continues to inspire both my professional and personal growth. What makes KFEET special to me is its strong sense of purpose. Every task, no matter how small, contributes to a greater mission of environmental education and conservation.KFEET’s supportive and collaborative culture makes it a truly exceptional workplace. The team’s dedication, openness, and shared values foster an environment where everyone feels appreciated and motivated to do their best. Working in such a natural setting, surrounded by the forest and the enthusiasm of young learners, brings a sense of calm and purpose to each day.

I love working at KFEET because it aligns with my values, allows me to contribute meaningfully, and offers continuous opportunities to learn and grow. It is a place where professionalism meets passion and where every effort, big or small, contributes to making a positive impact.

Wafula Mark Wekesa – KFEET Facility Caretaker

This is the most ideal place within the Karura Forest starting from available facilities, especially the auditorium, former Club house and recreational field, not forgetting parking points.

It is a privilege to be part and parcel of KFEET staff, disseminating conservational information to our esteemed visitors as well as regular clients and ensuring our environment is habitable. Personally, I do appreciate the Trust partners who came up with the idea of establishing this foundation which is very fundamental to the general society. As you all know, Karura forest being the only natural forest within the capital city, KFEET stands out as a center of excellence in providing environmental and conservation education as well as facilitating learners.

Simon Kariuki Gatimu – KFEET Facility Caretaker

Since joining KFEET early this year, I have come to realize that this place is actually very important to so many people regardless of their background, age and religious affiliation.

At KFEET we value every individual thus we are vibrant staff in handling students, visitors and even regular clients. May God bless KFEET abundantly.

Janet Wanjiku – KFEET Cleaner

KFEET is full of love, and the management is very understanding. I can’t imagine ever wanting to miss work. Our leaders and office staff treat everyone equally, I’m never made to feel less important because I’m a cleaner. We are all valued and respected.

The most special thing about KFEET is the children’s programmes. They make me so happy – serving them, seeing them learn, laugh and play around brings me great joy.

I know the team cares about me, and I care about them too. Even when I’m on leave, I find myself wanting to come to work because KFEET truly feels like home.
